What is Spirulina?

Spirulina is one of the healthiest natural resources in the entire world, and it is actually one of the oldest living organisms in the entire world. Spirulina is a blue/green algae that thrives in highly alkaline stretches of fresh water. It is located in both tropical, and sub-tropical environments, and was consumed primarily as a food source several centuries ago. This algae is jam-packed full of natural goodness, including: vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, and minerals. In particular, it is rich in B vitamins, as well as Iron. Believe it or not, but spirulina, pound for pound, actually contains more protein than meats such as chicken and beef, as it contains a whopping 55 – 70% protein per serving. On top of that, it boasts an incredibly impressive amino acid profile, as it contains 8 essential amino acids, as well as 10 non-essential amino acids.

How does it work?

In the body, spirulina works in a whole variety of different ways, because it is so rich in natural goodness. For example, as it contains amino acids and so much protein content per serving, it can actually help to initiate protein synthesis and assist with the growth and repair of new muscle tissue. As it is rich in antioxidants, it can strengthen and boost the immune system, whilst adding an additional level of protection against free-radicals and toxins that can damage the body and cause a wide range of health issues, including cancer. It also contains compounds that have been found to supress the appetite, making this a fantastic supplement for anybody looking to lose weight. As it supresses the appetite, as you become less hungry, you consume less food, and subsequently, less calories. The B vitamins help provide energy, the other vitamins and minerals help boost immunity, and in general this supplement, or rather, this superfood supplement, boosts health and well-being in a whole variety of different ways.

What are the benefits of using Spirulina supplements?

Some of the primary benefits associated with this supplement include:

Strong immune system

As mentioned, as spirulina is packed full of so many nutrients and healthy ingredients, it strengthens the immune system in a whole variety of different ways. This means that we benefit from added levels of protection against illness and disease, and our bodies function healthier, and as they should.

Weight loss

Not only is this supplement ideal for overall health and well-being, it is also very useful for anybody looking to lose weight. As you know, in order to lose weight, you need to be in a calorie deficit, and when you’re constantly hungry whilst dieting, remaining in said deficit is much easier said than done. Spirulina however, contains ingredients that help to suppress the appetite and increase satiety, which basically means that we eat less, and stay full for longer. If you’re feeling full, obviously you’ll consume less calories anyways, and as a result, will lose weight.

Cancer prevention

As spirulina is a superfood, it is packed full of antioxidants that help to eradicate toxins and free-radicals, and prevent them from attacking our cells. These harmful compounds can attack our cells and cause them to mutate via oxidation, which could turn them cancerous. Antioxidants however, fight and prevent the effects of oxidation, and destroy harmful compounds before they have chance to attack the body. Spirulina supplements are highly anti-carcinogenic, making them incredibly beneficial.

Other benefits include:

  • Weight loss
  • Improved health and well-being
  • Improved digestion
  • Stronger immune system
  • Cancer prevention
  • Increases in energy
  • Healthy looking skin
  • Anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Increased energy levels
  • Rich in protein and amino acids.

How and when should it be consumed?

For optimal results, experts recommend consuming 5 – 15g of spirulina powder per day, split into 1 – 3 5g dosages. Simply add 150 – 250ml of water or juice to a glass, add 5g of powder, give a good stir/mix, and enjoy.

Spirulina VS Chlorella

If Spirulina VS Chlorella was compared to a boxing match, it would be Tyson VS Ali of the algae world, as both of these forms of algae have their loyal fans, and both of which are considered to be amazing at what they do. Both of which are forms of blue/green algae, just as both are complete sources of protein. Chlorella however, despite the fact that it is a single cell algae, can grow and reproduce at a much quicker rate than spirulina, as it can become four-times as large in less than 24 hours! Both of which help to promote the growth and repair of healthy cells and tissues, although spirulina is higher in B vitamins than Chlorella, which gives it an edge when it comes to energy production.

What can it be stacked with?

Spirulina can be stacked with other healthy supplements to really provide the ultimate health stack each day, although commonly, it is stacked with Super Greens Powder, wheat grass powder, Multi-vitamin, EFAs, Vitamin C, and Zinc.

No one sells spirulina in bulk so no one can match this price. Hard to determine the quality but it seems of decent quality.

I have received the product only a couple of days ago. It does not taste good. But it isn't necessarily supposed to. Ha. It's decent in my shakes though

I really bought this supplement mostly to get a promo that saved me 15% on my protein order. That said, I've been sleeping better than at any other point in my life (39 yrs) since I've been using it. At this point, I'm not sure if it's because of the Spirulina but we'll see when the bottle runs out.
