When it comes to building muscle and getting in shape, it’s safe to say that supplements can play a vital role in helping to get you to where you need to be, which is why more and more people are using them to their advantage. One supplement however, which appears to, at least in the past, have been vastly underappreciated, is Agmatine sulfate, which we’ll be taking a more direct look at right now.
Agmatine sulfate is a natural derivative of the amino acid L-arginine. L-arginine is a primary amino acid that is responsible for countless processes within the human body. Over the years, Agmatine sulfate has been found to be able to provide even more benefits, making it not only essential for health and well-being, but also very efficient from a health and fitness point of view as well. It is actually stored naturally within our neurons, and it has been found to, amongst other things, help function as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator, which in turn ensures that it can assist with the correct function of the CNS, or Central Nervous System.
As mentioned, Agmatine can function as a potent neurotransmitter, which in turn can help to promote the production and secretion of valuable hormones within the human body, including growth hormone. As if that wasn’t all, it can also assist with protein synthesis, in which the body synthesises new muscle proteins, and it assists with the production and secretion of Nitric Oxide, which can help boost circulation and enhance athletic performance. The benefits don’t stop there however, as it can also help assist with the removal of waste nitrogen products from the body, and it can help regulate blood glucose levels. The primary way in which agmatine sulfate is able to function is due to the fact that it is able to easily cross the blood-brain barrier, where it then enters the CNS. From here, it binds onto NMDA glutamate receptors. It is a primary neurotransmitter required for memory function, cognitive function, and synaptic plasticity, and it can therefore provide countless benefits, both cognitive, and physical as well.
Just an example of some of the main benefits associated with Agmatine Sulfate, include the following:
As mentioned, this supplement is able to assist with the natural production of Nitric Oxide, which functions as a vasodilator within the human body. This means that it causes the blood vessels to expand, therefore allowing more oxygenated blood to pass through them. This oxygen and various other nutrients are then delivered to the cells in the muscles in larger dosages, meaning that the muscles can function more efficiently before they fatigue.
Another benefit of this supplement is the fact that it can help increase protein synthesis, which in turn, means that it can assist with the production of new muscle proteins following an extensive workout. Protein synthesis is essential for post-workout recovery, making this an excellent supplement for increasing lean muscle mass.
As Agmatine sulfate primarily functions as a neurotransmitter, which is easily able to cross the blood-brain barrier, studies have found that it can provide a number of cognitive health benefits, including being able to improve mental health, improve memory and concentration, and even help to prevent degenerative diseases such as dementia.
Another great benefit of Agmatine, is the fact that it also functions as a potent and powerful antioxidant, which in turn can help to boost the immune system, and rid the body of toxins and free radicals. Not only can this help prevent more common ailments, it can also provide protection against more serious diseases, such as cancer.
Other benefits include:
As far as how and when it should be taken, that all generally depends on what you plan on using the supplement for. For mental health, experts recommend between 1.6mg and 6.4mg taken, per kg of bodyweight. For fitness and athletic purposes however, recommended daily dosages are around 1g – 2g per day. On training days, take around one hour before training, and on off days, take whenever you like.
Citrulline Malate is another similar supplement to Agmatine, in that it too is based around muscle pumps and stamina, but what are the main differences? Studies have found that Agmatine sulfate is considered to be more beneficial for muscle pumps and circulation, than citrulline malate, and although usually more expensive, many experts agree that it is well worth the extra cash. Citrulline Malate is converted into NO, or Nitric Oxide, whereas Agmatine sulfate actually influences NO levels by inhibiting enzymes that have been found to break down natural NO.
As it is considered a Nitric Oxide booster, many people use this supplement as a pre-workout supplement, or possibly even intra-workout. With that being said, anybody looking to increase their muscle mass can stack it with a good quality whey protein, as well as Creatine, as the additional energy provided by the creatine, will be transported around the body far more effectively and in much higher dosages, due to the increased blood flow.
As far as side effects go, generally the potential side effects you can expect with Agmatine Supplementation are few and far between, but always be sure to consult your doctor before trying anything new. Some examples of reported side effects however, include:

|I add this to my Creapure and I get a better pump plus it makes me as hard as granite. Love it when someone touches me and can't believe how hard I am, 'Holy cow your shoulders/arms are rock hard'. lol My bag came with a scoop.|
|This agmatine gives me great pumps when I take it about 30mins before working out. Feel I can focus more and push out a few more reps. I used it as part of my PCT. And it helped maintain my strength which is excellent especially when 'coming off'. The only con, is that it doesn't come with a measuring scoop. So I had to eyeball when I was mixing. Which when I put too much (like most other supps) gave me gastro problems. Nothing serious though.|
