What is Taurine?
Taurine is a non essential amino acid that is composed of a derivative of
L-cysteine breakdown in the body. Taurine while considered non essential to the
body under normal conditions becomes rapidly depleted with cardiovascular or
physical exertion. When we resistance train or do cardio levels of taurine in
the body are often depleted and can no longer keep up to the metabolic demands
therefore performance decreases. Taurine binds itself to other amino acids and
is created in the liver and brain and can act as a neurotransmitter. Taurine
can increase muscle power output, muscular endurance, cell volumization, and
promote a sense of focus and concentration. Taurine can be taken by men and
women and is generally used only when training.
How to take Taurine?
Taurine is most effectively used when a dose of 1-3g is taken immediately
pre workout, and then again 1-3g post workout. The first pre workout dose is
for muscle strength, endurance, and focus. The post workout dose will replenish
taurine levels, increase insulin release sensitivity in the anabolic window,
and volumize cells increasing anabolism.
What to stack it with?
Taurine by itself has many benefits but it may be stacked with any pre
workout supplements, creatine, BCAA’s, etc. Stacking the post workout dose of
taurine with sugar based carbohydrates such as dextrose, maltodextrin, or waxy
maize at there respective doses for your body weight can take advantage of the
anabolic window and spike insulin levels. Do not stack Taurine with any energy
drinks or beverages containing taurine.
Benefits?
Muscle Building- Taurine can affect muscle building in 3 distinct ways.
1) Increases muscle force output. When taurine becomes depleted the muscle
contraction enzymes such as calcium and other elements are not available.
Supplementing with taurine replenishes these enzymes and allows the muscle to
contract with greater force. This can allow more weight to be used in training.
2) Increases muscle endurance. Studies show supplementing with taurine can
cause 25-50% increases in muscular endurance output. This will allow you to
train harder and longer during cardio and weight training improving growth. 3)
Recovery. Taurine acts as a powerful antioxidant in the body and can buffer
away byproducts and waste in the muscle to allow reduced inflammation and
improved recovery ability. This will allow you to recover quicker and increase
muscle mass quicker after hard workouts.
Fat Loss- Taurine is very effective for fat loss as it can regulate
blood-sugar levels. It also increases insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance
so that excessive blood sugars do not get stored as fat as easily. For fat loss
taurine’s effects on blood-sugar can help maintain a healthy blood sugar level
resulting in better moods (less ups and downs in energy) and less fatigue in
periods of dieting or stress.
General Health- Taurine can act as a neurotransmitter and cause a sense
of focus and concentration by being able to cross the blood brain barrier and
act on the brain. During times of fatigue or where there is a need for
increased concentration taurine can be beneficial.
