WHAT IS IT
AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Cissus Quadrangularis
has been around as a medical plant for ages and ages. It was first used as a general tonic and
analgesic used specific bone fracture healing properties. There may have been something to this because
modern medicine has shown Cissus Quadrangularis to aid in the healing of bones
by acting as a glucocorticoid antagonist.
Since anabolic and androgenic compounds are well known to act as
antagonists to the glucocorticoid receptor as well as promote bone growth and
fracture healing, it has been thought that Cissus Quadrangularis possesses anabolic
and or androgenic properties. In conjunction
to healing bones and fractures, Cissus Quadrangularis has also been shown to
increase the tensile and breaking points of bones as well. Although this may be a huge advantage to
athletes and active people alike, Cissus Quadrangularis possesses anther
characteristic that needs to be mentioned; just as Cissus Quadrangularis aids
in bone repair, health and strength, Cissus Quadrangularis also aids in the repair,
health and strength of connective tissue, like tendons which offers yet another
advantage.
While the
increased rate of bone and connective tissue healing may be of great
significance to athletes and active people and those suffering from chronic
diseases like osteoporosis, the anti-glucocorticoid properties of Cissus Quadrangularis
may be of much more interest to bodybuilders and athletes since endogenous
glucocorticoids, particularly cortisol, are not only catabolic to bone, but muscle
tissue as well, in fact, Cissus Quadrangularis may also help preserve muscle
tissue during times of physical AND emotional stress.
Perhaps one
of the lesser, yet an extremely important characteristic of Cissus Quadrangularis
which needs to be noted is that Cissus Quadrangularis is also rich in the
vitamins/antioxidants including vitamin C and beta-carotene.
Last but not
least, Cissus Quadrangularis has also shown to possess analgesic properties on
a mg per mg basis comparable to aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs like
ibuprofen. Cissus quadrangularis constitutes one of the ingredients of an
Ayurvedic preparation, `Laksha Gogglu', which has been proved to be highly
effective in relieving pain, reduction of swelling and promoting the process of
healing of the simple fractures as well as in curing the allied disorders
associated with fractures.
