What is L-Arginine?
L-Arginine is a non essential amino acid produced by the body in very
small doses. It is a supplement used to raise nitric oxide (NO) levels in the
body by allowing the body to synthesize more nitric oxide to be used at a
cellular level and in skeletal muscle. The general population may get enough
arginine from food such as dairy products but supplementing with pure
L-arginine can increase workout performance.
L-arginine acts by constricting the blood vessels and lowering the blood
pressure slightly. This change in the body causes increased vasodilatation and
blood flow to the target muscle and can help to shuttle more nutrients to the
muscle to enhance growth. Furthermore, L-arginine helps to improve the removal
and excretion of ammonia a negative byproduct of muscular action. L-arginine is
used in many medical uses to treat erectile dysfunction, aid in heart
conditions, and healing of wounds.
How to take L-arginine?
L-Arginine is best consumed on a empty stomach 30 minutes prior to weight
or resistance training, or athletic or endurance events. It can be taken at a
dose of 5grams (1 rounded teaspoon) to produce maximum effects. Such a dose
should increase the users pump during the workout and provide the benefits of
the supplement. Supplementing with more than 5grams will not increase
performance as your body can only utilize a specific amount of this non
essential amino at a given time.
What to stack with L-arginine?
L-arginine is best stacked in a pre workout combination with supplements
such as creatine, BCAA’s, beta-alanine, caffeine, etc. It can be stacked with
any or all of those ingredients at respective doses to provide a boost in
energy, anabolism, and muscular endurance before training.
A common and effective stack reported by users is: 5g L-arginine + 5g
BCAA’s+ 3g Beta Alanine consumed 30 minutes pre workout. These ingredients
together can cause a synergistic effect enhancing training performance.
Benefits?
Muscle Building- One of the main ingredients in most pre workout
supplements on the market today L-arginine provides many pathways to muscle
growth. First it increases the blood flow to the target muscle which can allow
greater nutrient portioning. Secondly it has been shown to remove ammonia a
waste product of muscular contractions so that in turn will cause a healthier
environment for the muscle to perform.
Fat Loss- Not applicable
General Health- Can be beneficial to sexual function by increasing blood
flow to specific organs. It can raise blood flow to areas in the body for
people with poor blood circulation. People with low blood pressure or heart
complications should avoid any arginine based product. New research shows
L-arginine can even help increase wound healing and some heart conditions (can
help decrease blood pressure). Check with your doctor before any type of
supplementation as always.
