What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a naturally occurring amino acid that is
used in the metabolism of the 3 main neurotransmitters in the brain; melatonin,
serotonin, and tryptophan. Serotonin often regarded as the pleasure center hormone
of the brain is what causes the feelings of happiness, and is often low in
people who are depressed or stressed. 5-HTP was discovered to alleviate some of
the symptoms associated with depression by raising serotonin levels when they
are low. 5-HTP is also known as an effective appetite suppressor due to the
increase in the neurotransmitter tryptophan causing a feeling of fullness (Think
of the full satiety feeling after a large turkey dinner). Thus the feeling of
being full can cause a blunting in the appetite suitable for dieting or calorie
restrictive states. 5-HTP is also commonly used as a sleep aid because it
causes a natural increase in melatonin and is known for its calming effects.

How to take 5-HTP?
5-HTP dosing is quite diverse and depends on the reason for usage. For
weight loss via appetite suppressing taking 100mg (1 capsule) in the morning 20
minutes prior to breakfast, and then 100mg (1 capsule) 20 minutes prior to
dinner time is most effective.
For sleep aid and to combat insomnia a dose of 100mg (1 capsule) to start
may be taken 20 minutes prior to sleep to start. This dose may be increased to
2-3 capsules depending on tolerance and the bodies individual reaction to such
supplements.
Lastly, for mood enhancement, stress relief, and raising serotonin taking
100 mg ( 1 capsule) morning, and 100mg (1 capsule) 6-8 hours later is most
effective.
5-HTP dosage has been noted in research to be taken in much higher
dosages but as a word of caution always start at a low dose and gradually
increase to prevent unwanted side effects (nausea, stomach discomfort, etc).
What to Stack with it?
5-HTP can be taken with other mental performance supplements such as
melatonin, and GABA. Dosages depend on individual. Generally stacking is not
necessary as 5-HTP is quite effective when used on its own at the correct dose
for the individual.
